We’ve made the 1250 km road trip north from Coolum to attend the Palm Creek Folk Festival. If you’re joining us for the event head 40km south of Townsville and turn right to Mountain View Lake Eco Park where the Best Little Festival in the North takes off.
Mountain View Lake Eco Park
The lake was practically dry last year, but about a month ago Townsville and district received 6 inches of rain so I’m hoping that Palm Creek 2017 will see the Lake brimming with water.
Palm Creek Camping.
This is the second time daughter and I have camped at the Palm Creek Festival for the week-end. Last year I erected the tents myself which was a bit of a stretch without tent boss Marty along. As the weather was so beautiful I didn’t bother securing the flies of the tents, an oversight which saw me bashing tent pegs in a mid-night downpour. I’m a fast learner though and this year Marty came along for the pre-event set up. We’ll be snug as bugs this year and if we’re not I’ll have someone else to blame. Brilliant.
It’s an extra $10/day/tent to set up prior to the event. It’s well worth it to escape the first day after-work crush. To set up early just pay the gate-person when you arrive.
Who Runs the Festival?
Volunteers from the Townsville Folk & Acoustic Music Club Inc. This is a non-profit event in it’s 26th year.
Dragon Parking area to left of stage.
Dates for 2017
8th to 11th June, 2017.
More than 100 performers over three stages, supported by acoustic jams, and no less than 22 workshops including dance, singing, hula hopping, drumming, aerial skills, stomp boxing, films, choir and environment.
The festival opens 6.15 pm Thursday on the Jam Tin Stage with seven first day acts, after which we’ll all totter back to our campsite for quiet refreshment time.
Dress up in Gold to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Townsville Folk Club.
There are quite a few food vendors on site, our Go To being the Govindas Pure Vegetarian (Hare Krishnas) as Cass is Vegan. The full list of stalls is displayed on the Palm Creek Facebook Page. Alcohol is not sold at the venue but you can BYO.
We try to re-heat one home cooked meal and bring our own nibblies, but purchase Espressos and the rest of our meals on-site. Last year our super-friendly and previously unknown-to-us neighbour handed over a plate of home made Italian meatballs. Luckily as the non-vegan camper it fell to me to devour them.
