Today we travelled from Barcelona to Madrid by Renfe AVE fast train. After walking half an hour to Barcelona Sants Train Station from our apartment, we grabbed a quick breakfast of coffee, orange juice, ham and cheese roll and pastry for 9 euros at the Station Cafe.
We presented the tickets that I had printed off our computer in Australia and our suitcases and backpacks were scanned like at an airport. Then with twenty minutes to spare we went to Platform 4 where our train was waiting. We found our seats, deposited our luggage and took our seats.
The train departed silently on the stroke of 9 a.m. and pulled into Madrid Atocha at 11.43 a.m. It was due to arrive at 11.45 a.m. Most of the time it’s speed hovered between 290kph and 300kph. I believe that if it arrives more than 10 minutes late they refund your fare!
The whole trip was silent and hassle free. Earpieces were handed out and “I am Number 4” was shown in Spanish with Spanish Subtitles. There was a cafe carriage but we didn’t go there. Madrid Atocha is a huge train station and the Information desk was helpful.
All in all it was a far superior experience than air travel. It was just so easy and as everyone boards the train as they arrive there were no queues. The obvious bonus is being able to see the countryside. It was amazing watching it change. If you looked away for a few minutes, you might return to a completely different scene.
It was great being able to walk to the Station and when we arrived right in the middle of Madrid.
I would thoroughly recommend this as a way to get from Barcelona to Madrid, and the further you book in advance, the cheaper it is!
