Durras North Lunch Spot overlooking Durras Lake Inlet New South Wales

Durras North Beach and Kangaroos

Durras Beach on the Shoalhaven coast of New South Wales Australia, is divided into two by Durras Lake. Having spent a lovely three days catching up with friends in South Durras it was time to hitch up our caravan and have a peek at Durras North. Just 25 minutes north of Batemans Bay amongst the tall straight trees of Murramarang National Park, it’s startlingly white sand beaches are bordered by the clearest blue/green ocean.

Durras North View

Durras North Looking across the inlet to the Ocean

It was lunch time when we drove through the sleepy village looking for somewhere with a view and couldn’t believe our luck when the road ended in this.

Durras North Lake Inlet New South Wales

With no other vehicles around we had plenty of room to negotiate a waterside spot with views over the lake intake and ocean.

The beach was bathed in bright sunshine and a pleasant breeze blew the curtains of the van as we ate.

Wildlife.

The only movement outside the van was a mother Oystercatcher and chicks dashing toward the water.

Kangaroos and wallabies usually come onto the beaches early morning or late afternoon, but as we turned the caravan around to leave I spied a mob resting and grazing beneath the tall shade trees at the back of the beach. This area of New South Wales has many places where kangaroos congregate near or on beaches. It’s not so common an experience in Queensland but we did find a great spot at Cape Hillsborough north of Mackay.

Durras North Kangaroos on Foreshore

Durras accommodation north of the lake, ranges from holiday houses and waterfront cabins to caravan and campsites.

  • Joalah Holiday Park (Cabins – some waterfront)
  • Durras Lake North Holiday Park (Cottages, Cabins, Campsites)
  • Durras Beach North Tourist Park (Powered and Unpowered Sites)

Durras North Beach is a great place to picnic and kangaroo watch

Free Camping near Durras North

While we didn’t need a free camp near Durras North there is one 25km south at North Head Camping Area at Batemans Bay. It’s a nice spot with a beach sunset, possums roam the site at night and there are kangaroos on the beach.

What a beautiful spot right on the beachfront. We did a day trip here when we were staying near Batemans Bay. I remember we had a picture postcard blue sky day the same as you had. I love this section of the South Coast of NSW.

How great it feels to have a beach just to yourself! I have visited some like that and those tend to be my favorite. Now, if I could only have kangaroos around! #TPThursday

What a beautiful uncrowded beach. It would be amazing to see kangaroos in the wild there.

Look at those kangaroos! So foreign to me as I’ve never seen one in person – ahh, someday!
