We just happened to be walking by on our way to Galata Bridge and I noticed the yellow taxis and yellow lights of the New Mosque in Istanbul.
I say New, but that is just a name.
It is actually well over 400 years old. Yep it’s birthday was way back in 1597. Hides it’s age well don’t you think?
In mosque talk the outside looks like that of it’s well known cousins, The Blue Mosque and the Süleymaniye Mosque with semi domes and grand domes while inside it has gold leaf, fancy tiles and marble. What I liked about it was the way the forecourt was a kind of meeting place for locals, tourists, speakers, mobile food vendors and seagulls. Everyone was welcome – a great place to watch the world go by from.
And it looks pretty all lit up too don’t you think?
Make sure you have a Fantastic Friday. If you haven’t already you can follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest.
Hi, Jan! Wow, I lost touch with you. I just Subcribed so hopefully we can keep in better touch now. You took this at such a perfect time for the lighting! And with some food vendors nearby I could easily sit and people watch for hours with that view! 🙂
It is so easy to lose touch Mike, there are so so many blogs out there. Thanks for subscribing.
Did you go inside? I still haven’t been inside this mosque…maybe 5th time lucky!
No I have not. I suggested toward the end of our trip but we had reached Mosque Overload. You should definitely go on the 5th visit. First up. Just walk across the bridge and straight in it’s doors 🙂
I really hope to make it to Istanbul this year. The Blue mosque has been on my bucket list for ages. Beautiful photo!
Hi Agness. The New Mosque looks like the Blue Mosque from the outside, I have not been inside the New Mosque. My favourite mosque was the Rustem Pasa – a small mosque whose entrance is hidden in the Tahtakale Shopping District. The stall holders know where the entrance is.
Hi Jan, yes it looks lovely lit up indeed. The taxis blend well with the light of the mosque. I didn’t go inside the mosque. I’m sure it’s as spectacular like the others.
I bet it is too Marisol. Doesn’t look over 400 years old does it?
Amazing picture i love istanbul i see this mosque last month.

It certainly adds to the exotic feel of the city. 🙂
So pretty lit up at night time….that’s a great building with a lot of history – 400 years old, imagine what those walls have seen!
I don’t think I would want to know those stories Lisa 🙂
