Having spent all day at Otres Beach Sihanoukville’s quiet beach option we found ourselves lounging on Pappasan chairs some 10km away on Ochheuteal Beach in Sihanoukville, hoping for a stunning sunset.
It did not look promising.
45 minutes later we were enveloped in a purple glow and then suddenly the sky was dark.
Have you ever seen a magical sunset and not had your camera with you? I did one night and the very next night I returned, camera in hand, to the exact same spot and the sun set without a whimper. Which started me thinking “How can you tell what if any colour a sunset will be?”
Google tells me that molecules and atmospheric particles change the direction of light rays producing scattering which in turn affects the colour – the actual colour varying with the wavelength of the light and the particle size.
So I guess for now I might just continue to pull up a seat, order a drink and see what wildcard nature has in mind. Do you have a theory about the best sunsets?

Great photos, I love the colors…
I kept contemplating if I should go south to see this area but got scared off by a denge fever scare that hit when I was in the country 5 years ago…now I see what I really missed out on, boo 🙁
Oh No – just as well there are plenty of beautiful sunsets elsewhere too 🙂
That’s gorgeous Jan – I love how you’ve shown the sunset’s progression. Yes, too many times I’ve thought ‘not going to be great tonight’ and then been somewhere else and seen the most amazing colours high in the sky and just know that I should have stuck around 😉
Yep, me too Jo and I also kick myself for missing them when I am sitting at home in the house!
I met my boyfriend on that beach after a sunset just like that. So beautiful.
That is wonderful place and way to meet your boyfriend. 🙂
Sunsets are one of my favorite things in nature—especially over water. I once even saw the green flash as the sun set into the ocean off Honolulu. We bought a house in Brigantine, NJ precisely because of the sunset views. If you search for “Brigantine sunsets” on my blog (as if you don’t have better things to do, I’m sure), you’ll see why we’re glad we did.
I remember that post Suzanne (I commented back then) and I still love the sunset photo through the reeds 🙂
those colors! amazing. and thank you so much for visiting my alaska cruise pictures. happy monday!

My pleasure, that was a lovely Alaskan trip.
Jan, Gorgeous! I love a purply-orange sunset…yum!
I love the purple ones. For some reason we don’t get them much where we live in N.Q.
Wow, for not having much initial promise you nailed a picture perfect, postcard quality shot there, Jan! Great job. I do my best to always have a camera with me…luckily my iPhone bails me out as a last resort sometimes 🙂
Thanks Mike. My IPhone (a hand me down from our daughter) died on the way to the Sunshine Coast about a month ago and I have been using a non-smart phone that we purchased in Turkey. Obviously it was a rip off Nokia because now it is dying too. I am waiting for the new IPHone to come out and I wish it would hurry up! I am going to love having it as a back up camera.
Wow! That is a beautiful sunset. The colours are amazing. My theory about beautiful sunsets is that there has to be some cloud in the sky for the refraction of the colours.
Yes clouds are a must Kathy.
WoW that’s indeed a magical sunset, well worth the wait.
