The Gothic Quarter, or Barri Gòtic, is a dense web of historic buildings and shady atmospheric squares nestled between La Rambla and the Via Laietana.
As travellers B.H. and I are drawn to ancient places and Barri Gotic was no exception. The labyrinth of lanes is full of delightful cafes and littered with Medieval and Roman buildings that lured me over and over again to whip out my camera – well let’s face it, I never actually put it away.
Barri Gotic is a photographic and romantic dream – a place where we threw away the map and wandered in awe.

Hi Jan,
Ah, I know, this is one of the most whimsical, magical and lovely places on earth! Your pics are really pretty. My favorite is the window grid with the wrought iron animal head in the fore.
I also like seeing your reflection as you snapped the last one!
Thanks for sharing!
~Josie
My favourite is the same Josie (twins). I did not even notice my reflection until I posted the photo. Jan
I love just wandering around and seeing what I can find. This looks like a fantastic place to do that. It must be interesting to live there.
You are right Michele – it would be lovely, but I think I would get sick of the tourists! Jan
I loved this part of Barcelona. We continually got lost here trying to find our way back to a cute shop of café. You’ve captured the feel of it so beautifully!
Thanks Jenny, I would go back there any day. It is wonderful how the buildings have been there for so long and remain unchanged – something we Australians don’t have (much of). Jan
WOW Jan. That first picture is just too beautiful for words! The composition is impeccable. What settings?! What camera did you use? Any special filters? I need to know it all! The photo is just too perfect <3
Overall, excellent photography though 😉

Hi Maria, We have a Power Shot Canon S95 and a Pentax K200 SLR. I am travelling in a car at the moment so I cannot look to see which cameras were used. Probably the Pentax. No special settings. We use it in Auto and just manually zoom and focus. It is a great camera – produces consistently good photos. It is old so doesn’t have fancy effects. A little too heavy though! The S95 is a back up camera and we use it if we can’t be bothered carrying the Pentax – It is a point and shoot and does well for its purpose. I am glad you liked the photos.
I love the close-up details of your photos this week, We wandered around the area for many hours when we were there last year and marveled at life and the architecture.
Thanks Leigh, the screen with the animal head on it was my favourite photo. I loved the violinist who played hauntingly beautiful music in the lanes.
I love the pics. The only time I’d ever been to Barcelona was with a large group so I didn’t get a chance to explore off La Rambla enough. Now I know what I missed out on! Thanks for sharing.
Pity about that. Las Ramblas is attractive but the lanes are so much better. Next time!
love the detailed shots. I love Barcelona and think that these little details are what makes it so beautiful.
I agree Jade, Barcelona is very lovable. I don’t think I have ever met anyone who thought differently which is pretty amazing really.
Nice use of details to give the mood of the place.
Thanks Dick, I hoped just a few photos would give a bit of an idea. More next time.
We just roamed around the Barri Gotic without a map, too. Just wish we could have spent a little more time exploring. Barcelona is one awesome city, isn’t it? Great shots!
Yes wonderful Cathy – I am daring someone to come out and say they don’t like Barcelona. Same as Lisbon – everybody loves it.
Very beautiful place 🙂
Love the metal work, Jan. Thanks for sharing! My cousins are blacksmiths who make stuff like that. I’ll pass it on!
Thanks Jordan, We stayed in a farmhouse in Tuscany where the owner had made all the metal work himself – lightfittings, door handles, etc. An interesting hobby. Jan
Love these! Especially the doors! In my post about Vienna, I wrote about architecture and unique buildings too, and how I would love to go to Barcelona to see Gaudi’s work!
Thanks Aleah, I am heading over the check out your Vienna post now. Jan
Love the detailed photos here. Barri Gotic is a very photogenic area, isn’t it.
Thanks Sophie, We spent a week in Barcelona and wandered through Barri Gotic at some stage every day. A beautiful place. Jan
Barri Gotic was great but I enjoyed the rest of Barcelona as well, it has something for everyone.
