Our daily walks in Barcelona, inevitably led us to Catalunya Place on our way to Barri Gotic.

Bronze Statue in Catalunya Plaza, Barcelona.Saviduria (Wisdom) by “Miguel Oslé. 1929”

Sabiduria - Wisdom Statue, Catalunya Place, Barcelona

Once in Barri Gotic, the Gothic quarter, we marvelled at this ultra modern sculpture.  Protests accompanied it’s dedication in February 2012.  With the current state of the Spanish economy maybe the local’s thoughts “We Need Bread Not Wire” were pertinent.

Looks as if you had a brilliant time in Barcelona, Jan. Your pic of the bronze statue is really imposing. We also loved our short time there too. I love the quote “we need bread not wire,” so pertinent to so much of what’s happening in Europe right now.
Thank you so much for subscribing and reading Zigazag’s recent newsletter and for letting me know about the changes I need to make. It’s so easy to make blunders, but not so easy to get feedback in order to sort them out. V Much appreciated. I’m not even sure the newsletter is interesting enough to be worth the considerable time it takes to put it together :() Onwards and upwards though 🙂
    Thanks again.
    Hugs and good wishes,
    Jo

Hi Jo, Spain in general was a revelation to us. Barcelona we found to be a light, fun city. Having the beaches (man-made for the Olympics) added another facet as well. Some of the art is crazy. No worries about the feedback, I love people giving me feedback! Jan

It is always wonderful to see new art installations, but I can imagine it would be hard to see money spent on wire when your tummy is rumbling with hunger. 🙁

Hi Krista, I don’t know if tummies were actually rumbling, but maybe the thought was that the money could be better spent. On the other hand Barcelona is known for it’s statues and artforms and that attracts tourists, which brings in the dollars. Who knows the answer!

That wire statue is weird…whats it meant to be about?
The bronze statue looks so heavy! It looks really well made – with lots of detail. Love that there is two different types of statues, each one unique in its own way.

Hi Lisa, The statue is dedicated to and meant to represent castellers or “human tower makers“. This is a traditional activity where people stand on each others shoulders to build a tower, so I can see the similarities. Whether it is worth the reported 600,000 Euro it cost to erect it is another thing! Jan
