As every local will tell you, no trip to Lisbon is complete without a trip 23 km North-West to Sintra.  We chose to visit the Castelo dos Mouros while in Sintra and it was well worth it.

Castelo dos Mouros dates back to the time when Portugal was under Moorish rule – right back to the Seventh Century A.D.  There is no actual castle, but the ramparts are extensive and in good repair, and the views are some of the best I have seen.  Evidently you can see Cascais from the ramparts – we could see the ocean easily but could not pin-point Cascais – maybe you will be able to!

It is a long walk from the entrance to the ramparts, but keep going – it is very worth it.  The views are amazing and children would love the climbing and pretending.  There is excavation work being carried out which was interesting to look at.  Even though we could not actually get closer than about three metres, we got a good feel for what was going on.

Make sure to catch the bus from Sintra to the Castelo as that hill is too much to walk, believe me.  It was hilarious enough trying to hang on around the bends and up, in the over-crowded bus!  Even though it was hectic trying to stay upright in the bus, everyone had lots of laughs.

Thanks Lisa, Crazy but fun, in a “I’m on holidays kind of way”. The ramparts and views were impressive. I will do a full post on it one day soon.
