I have been reading Britt’s Monday Post from In Pursuit of Happiness blog. Even though she had been to the funeral of her close friend’s dad and car mechanical problems stranded her and Jared overnight in a convenience store car park, she still found positives in her life, that made her happy.
That started me thinking of my own week. My good friend, whom I have known forever, left our home town, and indeed Australia, and together with her husband and children has shifted to New Zealand. They are going to make a new life in the land of the long white cloud – the containers holding a lifetime of chattels are on a boat mid ocean as we speak!
“What makes me happy about that?” – you may well ask. It took me a while to think of some positives, I can tell you – but I managed to find a few!
- We are lucky that we can keep in touch via facebook and emails, and when they are settled we can skype. With a bit of self-delusion I may even manage to pretend they are still here!
- In reality, I am happy that they are off following a dream, because that is what life is about.
- Airfares are quite cheap between Australia and New Zealand and my crystal ball is telling me there will be a few Tasman Crossings in the future. I can even blog about said trips.
To balance the scales another long time friend, fellow traveller, and BTT’s first awesome interviewee, Jake, has returned to Australia and is actually settling down in our neck of the woods for a while. I can look forward to lots of budget travel talk with him – and that always makes me feel alive!
Marty and I leave Australia in ten days time for seven weeks in Spain. Two of those weeks will be spent on a house-sit in a small hilltop village where we will be taking care of a lovely shiny brown pooch. This chance to house-sit is wonderful because neither of us have been to Spain before, so we intend travelling around before and after our housesit. There are last minute plans to be made and the excitement is building.
Our daughter is putting finishing touches to her paintings for a local emerging artists exhibition at he Perc Tucker Gallery, while our Son is joining us and friends water-skiing over the Easter Break. We are going to the same secret place that I have written about before water skiing/camping week-end. Smiles all round on the family front.
A bit of last minute garden preparation is keeping me busy and before we leave I will be planting tomatoes, silverbeet (spinach), and flowers to attract bees to pollinate the crops.
In eight weeks time when I am feeling the end of holiday blues, I can go down into my garden and collect some lovely home grown tomatoes, make a fetta and spinach pie with the silverbeet, and smell the flowers (looking out for the bees first!). It is exciting to anticipate good things in the future.
There is always something to feel happy about. Let me know what you are feeling happy about today!

Miss Britt
Your friends are really lucky to have you actively looking for reasons to celebrate their move, despite your own sadness about not having them around as often.
And I’m totally jealous of your trip to Spain!!
Jan
Thanks for dropping by – it was you who started me thinking about the positives Britt!

Its always sad when someone leaves but then again it would be fantastic to take a trip to New Zealand to visit your friend 🙂
WOW that trip to Spain is coming up fast. You will have so much fun that you wont want to come home! I so miss gardening – its one of my all time favorite past-time…planting new things and watching them grow!
Have lots of fun with your house sit – looking forward to following your journey.

I planted my tomatoes and basil today. Have you tried growing in containers that you can take with you when you shift camp. Or is David like Marty and have a fit at the thought! I have so much to do before I leave. I am still waiting to see where you end up!
