The Strand is one of our favourite walks because it is the perfect length (4.4 km return), with the option of a small hill walk if we feel so inclined. During the hot summer months we walk there to take advantage of the cooling sea breezes. As soon as the weather cools, Riverway Townsville walking tracks on the banks of the Ross River in the Townsville suburb of Kirwan once again pique our interest. This 3.7km circuit is one of the best Townsville walking tracks during the winter months. Conveniently we can walk to Riverway from our home and although this makes for a longer walk than the Strand Townsville it does save on fuel costs.
Time to reacquaint ourselves with the Riverside walk. As the name suggests this track hugs the river and the circuit is provided courtesy of two bridges – the Federation (foot) Bridge that connects Weir School to the Riverview Tavern and the pedestrian bridge beneath the Vickers Bridge further upstream on the Ring Road.
On the day we chose to reacquaint ourselves there was just enough shade from the huge rain trees in Pioneer Park and the Itara Riverside apartments on the town side of the River to shield us from the afternoon sun and on the return leg which runs riverside through the suburb of Douglas we were walking into the afternoon breeze. Perfect 🙂
Why don’t you join us on the walk – It takes an hour from the start of the loop at Federation Foot Bridge on the Kirwan side of the River.

If you need to cool off you can jump into the upper or lower Riverway Lagoon Pools. They are free!

Halfway on the Riverside Circuit and we are on the home stretch.

We are back where we started and happy to be walking the Riverway Circuit again.

What a lovely walk. Townsville is such a pretty city…I can see why you live there!
Townsville is a working man’s city but has it’s good points. We love Perth too. After two years we could quite easily have stayed there. The only reason we returned to Townsville was our families. One day I am sure we will live in Perth again. 🙂
what a great walk to have, we love walking along the beaches here in Wollongong. Mind you when we spent the Easter weekend at hill end we loved walking along the dirt tracks discovering as much as possible.
